Walking on the Jurassic Coast - June 2011

Twenty members of the walking group recently spent an extremely enjoyable weekend walking on the Jurassic Coast. Our journey began on Friday 17th June when we travelled to Bournemouth our base for the weekend. Before we left the weather forecast was not good and I think we were quite apprehensive about how wet we might get. As it was the only rain that we had was on Friday afternoon which was a free afternoon in Bournemouth.

On Saturday we travelled to the village of Studland to begin our first walk. We climbed gradually to reach the clifftop overlooking Old Harry Rocks before continuing the gentle ascent on to Ballard Down. Here we stopped to admire the superb views all around – from Poole Harbour and Bournemouth in the east, the Isle of Wight and the Needles in the south, round to Swanage and the Purbeck coast stretching across the west. From here we continued down to Swanage for a well earned lunch.

After lunch we followed the coast towards Peveril Point. There was then a steep climb that took us high above the sea at Durlston Castle. From here we continued along the coast to Tilly-Whims Caves.

On Sunday we travelled to the pretty village of Kingston were we were able to look down at the ruins of Corfe Castle three miles away. From here we walked through the Scott Estate and some mature woodland until we reach the sea with its beautiful views of the spectacular Jurassic Coast. We then climbed the steep steps leading to Houns Tout Cliff where we were able to take in the views of Portland Bill, Weymouth and Lulworth Cove. The views from here were truly spectacular. From here we walked back to Kingston and then travelled to Lulworth Cove for lunch. After lunch we started the long journey home.
