Itinerary
Day 1: Haworth
Your holiday begins when you board our private coach in the early morning and travel to our hotel. During the course of the journey we make appropriate comfort stops including a visit to Haworth for some free time. This charming little Yorkshire village with its steep cobbled streets, is most famous for being the home of the Bronte sisters. We continue to our hotel arriving in time for your included evening meal.
Day 2: Guided Walk
After your included breakfast you board our coach and travel to Barden where we meet our guides for today’s walk. The whole of today's walk follows the course of the River Wharfe, upstream, along a section of the Dales Way Long Distance Footpath. Shortly after the start we pass 'The Strid', where the river can be an intense roaring torrent, pounding through a narrow and dangerous cleft carved by the water cutting its way through the soft limestone. Our next landmark is the stone bridge and aqueduct carrying water from Nidderdale towards the West Riding of Yorkshire. We maintain the pretty riverside path, passing below Appletreewick-pronounced 'Ap'trick' by locals-to reach the small village of Burnsall. This is a good place to stop for lunch (not included). Also, for those seeking a shorter walk, it is possible to rejoin the coach to go directly to Grassington, a busy Dales village with a variety of small shops, cafes and inns. From Burnsall we pass under the towering cliffs of Wilfrid Scar and Loup Scar then cross the river by a foot suspension bridge before reaching Grassington. Having completed todays walk we return to our hotel in time to freshen up before your included evening meal. Today’s walk is approximately 8 miles long - 5 miles in the morning and 3 miles in the afternoon.
Day 3: Guided Walk
After your included breakfast we check out of our hotel and travel to meet our guides in Malham. The walk leaves Malham via a field path to reach the pretty waterfall known as Janet's Foss. From here we follow a minor road for approximately 300 yards then continue parallel with Gordale Beck to reach Gordale Scar, a dark steep sided gorge, where over hanging rocks create an awe inspiring scene. After retracing our steps back to the road, our route proceeds below steep cliffs and, after a steady ascent, we reach the superb limestone pavement at the top of Malham Cove. Those walkers preferring to avoid the ascent will continue to the base of Malham Cove, where they will be able to relax whilst waiting for the rest of the group. Those continuing to the top of Malham Cove will have chance to explore the limestone scenery before descending steeply for 230 feet, by steps, to the base of the Cove. From the Cove we follow an easy path back to Malham where we stop for lunch (not included) before commencing our journey home, arriving back in your local area in the mid evening. Today’s walk is approximately 5 miles long Safety and Comfort: The walks advertised in this brochure are designed and led by an experienced walking guide. They are suitable for anyone who is fully mobile and reasonably fit (you need to be able to climb a stile without difficulty) and they are relatively easy, though we realise everyone has their own pace so for your own health and safety there will also be a back marker to guide you. It is essential that you wear the appropriate footwear - either strong shoes or boots which give ankle support (boots are obviously the better option, plimsolls are definately not!) with soles which give a good grip as you are walking in the countryside where surfaces may be uneven/wet etc. We recommend that new boots are worn in for your own comfort. A waterproof coat, warm clothes and comfortable trousers are also strongly advisable. A rucksack or backpack is recommended to carry any extra clothes (you never know what the English weather has in store!) and a drink would be helpful to avoid dehydration. Don't forget your binoculars / cameras either!
